Te Reo/Tikanga Māori

Commitment to te reo māori in my future classroom

As apart of our whakauranga o ngā marautanga paper we had to create the types of ideas that would be seen in the classroom that shows our commitment to te reo māori. These are some of the ideas I came up with:
  • Using whakataukī in our class to explore great values within our class, for example:
    • Mā ponga mā whero, ka oti te mahi --->
  • Interactive daily weather/date/month calendar with māori kupu.
  • Labels around the classroom to help with te reo instruction is used in the classroom.
  • Oral language is introduced and effectively used within the classroom: mihi, waiata, basic commands and sentence structures.
  • Classroom links with local runaka and marae
  • Integrated curriculum with māori kupu

The Basket's of Knowledge

For my second year Tikanga Tuku Iho project I looked in to the topic of the Basket's of Knowledge. Through Te Ao Māori it is believed that this is the pūrākau responsible for knowledge transcending from atua to men. This is an important pūrākau to teach students about the importance and what a privilege education is. In this assignment I discussed how I could implement this cross-curricularly (English, health, social studies and art). I look forward to implementing units like these into my future classrooms.

Kei te pēhea koe?

He Kākano Noaiho

As apart of our college work for our He Kākano Noaiho (2013) paper had to produce a communicative resource that was classroom friendly. At the end of 2013 I had a posting at Edendale Primary in a year 1 class so I wanted to make resource that based around an phrase that was fun and introduced them to te reo.  I created a resource that followed the IRDPX strategy (input, recognition, discrimination, production and extension) of learning a second language. This strategy scaffolds students to create new understanding. It creates a step-by-step model that requires more knowledge as they work through the resource (metaphorically like poutama – each step builds on the last).
My resource includes a power point and poster to display within the classroom and to be used through the beginning stages of my resource.
